Lowes topped the table on Day 1

It was a strong opening day for the Brits in the final World Superbike pre-season test with four British riders at the top of the timesheets in Australia.

With the start of the season now just days away, Alex Lowes stole the top spot in the closing stages on the Voltcom Crescent Suzuki ahead of new Kawasaki recruit Jonathan Rea, Aprilia-man Leon Haslam and 2013 World Champion, Tom Sykes.

It was former MotoGP star Randy de Puniet who led the day’s opening 120-minute session but a heavy fall for the Frenchman in the afternoon saw him sit out of the rest of the day’s proceedings.

Throughout the day, Kawasaki duo Jonathan Rea and Tom Sykes were almost unseparable, with Rea toppling his teammate around the mid-point before Red Devils Aprilia’s Leon Haslam snuck into third position.

Rea finished second, ahead of Haslam and Sykes

Moto2 refugee Jordi Torres impressed with the fifth fastest time ahead of leading Ducati Davide Giugliano. Chaz Davies followed his Italian teammate by a further two tenths to place seventh.

Early pacesetter De Puniet set the eighth fastest time ahead of reigning World Supersport champion Michael van der Mark on the PATA Honda. Althea Ducati’s Nico Terol rounded out the top ten.

David Salom was eleventh fastest on the Pedercini Kawasaki ahead of MV Agusta’s Leon Camier. World Champion Sylvain Guintoli got off to a slow start with PATA Honda after missing out on a large part of Spanish testing due to a heavy highside.

EBR’s Niccolo Canepa was fourteenth with Matteo Biaocco rounding out the top fifteen. Testing resumes tomorrow.
