What is motorbike insurance?

Motorbike insurance is a legal requirement for riding on UK roads. It offers financial protection if you’re involved in an accident, cause damage to another vehicle, or injure someone. Depending on your policy, it can also cover you if your bike is stolen, vandalised or damaged.

What kind of motorcycle insurance do I need?

Choosing the right type of motorcycle insurance in the UK depends on how you ride, what you ride, and the level of protection you want. Whether you're commuting daily, riding for leisure, or storing your bike for part of the year, understanding the different types of motorbike insurance - Third party, Third party fire and theft, and Fully comprehensive - can help you make an informed decision. In this short guide, we’ll break down each option so you can find the cover that best suits your needs and budget.

Types of motorbike insurance cover

Fully comprehensive

The most extensive type of cover; fully comprehensive motorcycle insurance provides peace of mind for almost every eventuality. The major difference to third party cover is that you can claim for damages or losses to your own vehicle as well as others, regardless of whether it’s your fault or not.

More about Fully comprehensive

Third party, fire and theft

The next level of cover is third party fire and theft, which takes the basic cover of third party only and includes an extra layer of cover should your motorbike be stolen; or if it is damaged while being attempted to be stolen or catches fire.

More about Third party fire and theft

Third party only

The most basic (and usually cheapest) level of motorbike insurance is third party only, which, as you would expect, provides the most limited but essential cover. If you are involved in an accident and another person is injured or their vehicle or property is damaged, then you will be liable for the costs incurred to compensate for their losses.

Bennetts offers a range of optional add‑ons, designed to give our customers added protection and peace of mind.

What factors affect the cost of motorbike insurance in the UK?

The cost of motorbike insurance in the UK can vary widely depending on several important factors. When insurers calculate your motorbike insurance quote, they assess your risk profile based on:

  • Your riding history and any previous claims

  • The make, model, and engine size of your motorbike

  • Your age, location, and where the bike is kept overnight

  • Other personal details that may influence your insurance risk

Understanding these factors can help you compare motorbike insurance quotes more effectively. Further details on how motorcycle insurance costs insurance costs are calculated.

How can I get cheaper motorbike insurance?

To help you get the most value from your policy, here are some simple ways to reduce your premium.

  • Keep your bike out of sight: If you have a garage, use it. Storing your bike in a locked and secure location could reduce your premium. Brick or concrete garages are ideal, but metal sheds, shipping containers, or solid timber structures on a concrete base can also work. Check with our team if unsure and get some advice from BikeSocial on all things storage and security.

  • Improve your riding: Complete an approved advanced riding course to boost skills and potentially lower your premium.

  • Accurate mileage: Riders often estimate higher mileage than they actually do. Providing a realistic annual mileage could reduce your premium.

  • Choose voluntary excess: Adding a voluntary excess on top of your compulsory excess may reduce your premium. Please be aware this is the amount you’ll pay first if you make a claim.

  • Length of ownership: The longer you have owned a bike, the more likely you are to generate a lower premium, as this proves you have experience riding your bike. However, you must be honest and accurate to avoid any issues should a claim arise.

  • Multi-bike cover: Own up to six bikes? You may be able to insure them all under one multi-bike policy with Bennetts. This may mean that you save money overall, rather than taking out individual policies for each bike.

Motorbike Insurance FAQ

See all insurance FAQs

Do I need motorcycle insurance?

Yes. Motorcycle insurance is a legal requirement to ride on UK roads. Riding uninsured can result in £300 fine, six penalty points, or disqualification.

What does motorbike insurance cover?

If you're involved in an accident, damage another vehicle or injure someone, having insurance will protect you from liability, and if your bike is stolen or vandalised, insurance can provide compensation.

What is not covered by motorbike insurance?

Any use of your motorcycle for despatch, courier, messenger or food-delivery services. It also excludes participation in racing, pacemaking, competitions or speed trials, although road safety rallies and treasure hunts are covered. Riding on race tracks or circuits - including de-restricted toll roads and the Nürburgring Nordschleife - is not included, nor is riding on trails that are not public roads. Your policy will also not cover situations where the motorcycle is hired out for payment, or when it is used to carry passengers for hire or reward.

What kind of motorcycle insurance do I need?

The type of motorcycle insurance you need depends on the level of cover you want. We offer three levels of insurance: Fully Comprehensive insurance, Third Party Fire and Theft and Third Party Only.

Is comprehensive motorbike insurance worth it?

Fully comprehensive cover is the highest level of insurance available. It includes the same protection as third party, fire and theft and also covers damage to your own bike, even in a fault claim. It is often competitively priced, but you should choose the level of cover that best suits your needs.

How much does motorbike insurance cost in the UK?

The cost of motorbike insurance can vary due to several factors. When we calculate the cost of your quote, we're assessing the risk of insuring you as a rider, looking at how likely you are to claim and how expensive it would be to pay out if you did make a claim. We consider your riding history and the size and capacity of your bike, as well as your age and where you live, among other factors.

How does Bennetts work out their quote for me?

We’ll search for the lowest quote from our panel of some of the top insurers. Our panel are all leading insurers and are quality checked by Bennetts.

Am I covered to ride abroad?

Your motorcycle insurance policy will automatically allow you to ride within Europe and any other country which has agreed to follow the EU Motor Insurance Directive (number 2009/103/EC), for up to 90 days in any period of insurance. If you want to ride abroad for more than 90 days in a year, then give us a call on 0344 412 2171 so we can look to arrange this for you.

Can I carry passengers with my motorcycle insurance?

Yes (unless you are riding on a provisional licence). Passengers would be covered while riding on and getting onto and off your bike and riding in or getting into and out of your sidecar.

Can I ride another bike on my insurance?

This benefit will be stated on your bike insurance schedule and insurance certificate. Subject to age conditions, occupation and type of bike, your insurance will cover you to ride other bikes. It is best to check this when you take out the policy (the bike must be over a minimum of 351 CC for example).

Can more than one person be on my insurance policy?

Yes. You can add another person to your policy as a named rider. As a named rider, they'll enjoy the same level of cover as you on your bike; however, be advised that if they make a claim, your No Claims Discount will be affected.

Can I insure more than one bike on one policy?

Yes. We can cover up to six bikes on one policy.

What is a No Claims Discount? (NCD)

No Claims Discount is an earned discount that is applied for every year that a rider has insurance on a motorcycle without making a claim. Please note, NCD can only be used on one active policy at a time.

Can I use my car no claims discount (NCD) when taking out motorbike insurance?

No. Your NCD must be relevant to your bike - your car NCD cannot be used. This is because riding a bike is very different to driving a car.

Does using security reduce my insurance premium?

Discounts may be available for certain security devices, subject to insurer criteria. Even basic security could reduce the chances of your bike being stolen by a factor of three.

Does the place I store my motorbike affect my insurance?

Yes. Insurers need to consider where your motorcycle is kept overnight, so storing it in a locked garage, shed or shipping container is likely to have a beneficial effect on your insurance premium.

Does having a tracker affect my insurance?

Trackers don’t automatically reduce your motorcycle insurance premium, but some insurers do offer discounts for certain approved devices if you meet their criteria.

What if I don't know my annual mileage?

One quick way is multiply your average weekly miles by 52. Alternatively, you can look at your previous MOT certificates, as your bike’s mileage is recorded at each test.

What is voluntary excess and how does it work?

You may be able to reduce your insurance premium by choosing to add a voluntary excess. This is the amount you agree to contribute towards a claim, in addition to the compulsory excess set by your insurer. The compulsory excess and voluntary excesses are added together to form your total excess, which is deducted from any claim payment.

Example: If your compulsory excess is £50 and you choose a voluntary excess of £150, total excess is £200. If you make a claim for £500, your insurer would pay £300.

Do you quote for bikes with modifications?

Yes. We have a list of common modifications that Bennetts accept as standard. These include: Disability Adapted, Air Filter Changes, Bar Ends, Braided Hoses, Decals / Stickers (Unless Race Replica), Grippers, Heated Grips, Huggers, Lights / Indicators / Mirrors, Scott Oilers, Screen Changes, Seat Replacement / Changes, Seat Cowl / Single Seat Units, Sissy Bars (Long Backrest), Tail Tidy, Tank Pads, and Road Legal Aftermarket Exhausts. We can still quote for certain modifications that are not covered as standard, and it is important that you declare all modifications, so they are covered under the policy.

What are the different levels of a motorcycle license?

At 16, completing your CBT allows you to ride a 50cc AM‑category moped limited to 28mph. At 17, you can move up to a 125cc A1‑class bike. You can ride on L‑plates or take the full A1 test to ride a 125cc without L-plates.

From 19, you can progress to an A2 licence, either by holding an A1 licence for two years or by taking the direct access route. This allows you to ride motorcycles up to 35kW.

To ride any motorcycle without power restrictions, you’ll need the full A licence. This is available from 21 through progressive access (after two years on A2), or directly from age 24 by completing CBT, theory and practical tests.
