This past week the two-wheel motorsport headlines have been dominated by the inaugural Bennetts Classic TT – a unique road racing event featuring classic stars as well as today’s modern heroes, all celebrating the history and heritage of the TT and motorcycle sport. Where else in the world would you see road racing greats such as Giancomo Agostini, Michael Dunlop and John McGuinness mixing together on track on some of the most exotic and iconic classic motorcycles?!
Taking place over the August Bank Holiday weekend, the Classic TT also provided the centrepiece of the new Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling, alongside the Manx Grand Prix (which is currently running), two of Britain’s biggest off-road events and the ever-popular VMCC Rally.
In a similar way to the Isle of Man TT – which takes place in May/June each year – the Bennetts Classic TT had a real festival atmosphere. Combining plenty of family-friendly activity as well as the on-track action and even a nostalgic paddock carnival!
One of the highlights of the event was the VMCC’s Festival of Jurby, which has quickly become one of the biggest spectator attractions away from the Mountain Course. Focusing on vintage motorcycles and vehicles, the festival now attracts more than 5,000 bikes and features some of the most iconic machines and riders in TT and motorcycling history.
Bennetts Marketing Director, Hannah Squirrell, said: “The Classic TT was a great event and we are proud to be involved, the Isle of Man holds a very special place in the hearts of the riders and the fans. The TT and Classic TT match our heritage and ambitions perfectly and with enthusiastic crowds, spectacular motorcycles on display and in action it is truly iconic. Plus where else will you have over 100 TT wins and more than 35 world championships between those riding?”
Classic TT Press Officer, Simon Crellin, added: "We've had a great week for the inaugural classic TT with packed grids contributing to some excellent racing. The grandstands were sold out for both race days and well over 10,000 people enjoyed the VMCC's festival of Jurby. It was also great to see TT stars past and present alongside some of the great names from motorcycling in a parade lap on the Mountain Course. The team have already started the planning for the 2014 event."
