Sam Lowes will stay in Moto2 next season

Britain’s Sam Lowes has signed a deal that will see him join Aprilia’s MotoGP team, but not until the 2017 season.

As we reported last week, the young Brit has opted to remain in Moto2 for a crack at the title in 2016 and will be placed in the Gresini outfit, which runs Aprilia’s premier class effort.

Lowes has impressed since moving to the Moto2 class last year, albeit aboard the less competitive Speed Up chassis.

Knowing he has more to give, the likeable 25 year old wanted a year on a competitive Moto2 bike in an attempt to become the first rider to win both the World Supersport and Moto2 titles.

“We did consider moving straight to MotoGP next year but in the end I’ve decided to stay in Moto2 as I believe I can fight for the title on a Kalex,” said Lowes speaking to Bike Social.  “We’ve shown we’re not that far off on the Speed Up, so I’d like to see what I can do on equal machinery.”

Lowes will also test Aprilia’s RSV-GP bike during the 2016 season, as he prepares to step up with the squad the following year in what is said to be a three-year deal.

In line with Lowes’ decision to stick with Moto2, Stefan Bradl, who moved to the Aprilia squad earlier this season, will continue with the team in MotoGP next year.
