Rossi now leads Lorenzo by 23 points

Valentino Rossi extended his lead in the MotoGP World Championship at Misano today, despite throwing away what looked set to be his fifth victory of the season by staying out too long on wet tyres.

The nine-times World Champion made a strong start to the race and was able to run with Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez at the front. When the rain came down on lap five, forcing riders to pit for wet tyres, Rossi was the fastest of the leading trio and soon took the lead.

However, as the track started to dry, Rossi was reluctant to swap back to his dry bike knowing he could potentially lose vital championship points if Lorenzo didn’t follow. When the pair did finally pit, they had lost significant time to the riders on slicks leaving them fifth and sixth respectively.

Fighting to keep up, Lorenzo dramatically crashed out in the closing stages, awarding Rossi an 11-point boost to his championship lead.

The Italian now leads his Movistar Yamaha team mate by 23 points with five races remaining.

“It is a shame for the race, especially here at Misano,” said Rossi after the race. “It is important to try to make a better result and arrive on the podium, but after a very good weekend with always the sun today the conditions were very, very difficult during the race.

Rossi admits he pitted too late

“The race was good, especially the first two-thirds because I was not so bad on the dry in the beginning when the conditions were very difficult for everybody. Then after we changed the bike for the first time, to rain tyres, was also a good part of the race because I was very strong and very fast.

“I also enjoyed fighting with Jorge and Marc, and I was in front. But after coming dry again and we had to change the bike again. It was a difficult decision, because for sure for me and Jorge fighting for the championship it is more tricky, more difficult, to try to take the right decision without risking too much.

“At that point of the race I was fast and strong, but I stayed out a little bit too much and I lose time for the next two laps. After we changed to slicks again and at the end I finished fifth. I wanna cry for sure! I look for a better result, also because I have a good potential in the dry but also the wet.

“But from the other side with the crash of Jorge is very important for the championship, because I extend my lead by eleven points and this is the most important thing. Also for sure in Misano, in front of all these people and this special atmosphere, arrive on the podium was the target but for the championship it is for sure a great and important result.”
