It has been confirmed that Marco Melandri will depart the factory Aprilia MotoGP team with immediate effect.
The move comes as no surprise and has been on the cards since Mugello, with the former GP race winner making no secret about being unhappy with the Noale factory’s RS-GP bike.
Melandri has failed to score a single point this year and sits last in the championship standings. His teammate, Alvaro Bautista, has a tally of 11 points to his name and sits 17th in the title chase after putting a fight up with the open category machines.
Bike Social understand that Aprilia test rider and British Superbike star Michael Laverty will stand in for Melandri at this weekend’s German Grand Prix
There’s a possibility the Ulsterman could take the seat on a more permanent basis, with no clashes of the British Superbike and Grand Prix calendars until October.
