As part of our “You ask, GP stars answer” series we put your questions to 500 GP star, Ron Haslam. Read his answers here:
How do you feel when you see your son ride?
Very nervous as I know what can happen but also very proud.
Why did you choose Donington for your race school?
Our best friend Robert Fearnall was running it and he gave us the encouragement to start up. It’s also the best circuit for the client to enjoy.
What would a parent like myself without racing backgrounds need to do to help my son into
serious racing should he wish to do so?
It’s all about contacts and luck you need good advice and financial help to get the best start.
With Schwantz doing the Suzuka 8 hour…..Do you fancy coming out of retirement to race?
I ride every week at the school helping customers. Leon and I go out a lot so I get lots of pleasure still on a bike so it’s enough, however, I did fancy a go last month at the 8 hour!
Where do you think Leon’s career is heading?
Leon has been at the top of his game for many years, this year has been so hard with his broken leg and this game is not so forgiving, they soon forget how good a rider is.He wants to be on a competitive machine with a good team to help him be the best.
Do you think back in the day with the correct funding that the Norton Rotary could have won a GP championship?
Yes with the right money and team they could have won.
Two Strokes or Four Strokes?
2 Stroke for me.
If you and Leon raced each other while you were both in your prime, who would have won?
We would have both ended up in the gravel.
What advice/support do you give to son Leon during his recent spell of injuries/bad luck?
Times like this either make or break you, every rider goes through a low patch and it’s all about belief. We as a family believe in him and he believes in himself to be back on top.
What’s your most memorable race and why?
I have raced since I was 15 years old so there are so many. The Isle of Man TT win. My first win at Cadwell aged 16 and winning all six races in different classes. I loved my GP career. Basically all of them!
