Suzuki’s GSX-R750 is the bike that time and motorcyclists are gradually forgetting, which is a shame because the GSX-R750 has a rich history. The original GSX-R was a heady mix of lightweight aluminium frame and powerful 16v engine oil/air-cooled engine and was created with the sole purpose of winning racing championships. As a road bike it was flighty and desirable – a true race bike for the road. But that was 29 years ago. Today’s GSX-R750 is still a superb sports bike but it doesn’t have the individuality or kudos it carried. For example its styling is no longer unique but mirrors its 600cc and 1000cc brothers. Because of its 750cc capacity, most buyers now look at the insurance friendly but rapid GSX-R600, or if needing extra the performance then the GSX-R1000 gets the vote. As with the rest of the GSX-R range, the engine is a rev-happy unit that loves the thrill of a chase especially at a track day. With so many years of refinement, the chassis and running gear is a delight to use on any surface. It is light and extremely agile and can stop on a sixpence – but then so can all superbikes today. And don’t get us wrong, the GSX-R750 is a wondrous machine but it is in a league of its own and this is its only real USP. Now, if only Suzuki styled it to be completely different, added special components to make it a heap more individual and desirable, then perhaps the legend of GSX-R750 will peak again. Knowing that next year will be the GSX-R’s 30th anniversary, the world is watching, waiting and praying for a special machine.
