Yamaha’s TRX850 was the surprise answer to Ducati’s V-twin dominance and its 900SS in the 90’s. It was no Ducati 916-beater but it handled pretty well all the same and was something different to all the faceless 600s of the day.
Many have had fork upgrades and new rear shocks to sharpen it up a bit. It only made 79bhp when new but felt faster than equivalent sports 600s of the same era thanks to a punchy power delivery from the 270 degree crank parallel twin motor it shared with the TDM850.
It had soul, character and was a bit vibey but it’s still a good bike and definitely a forgotten future classic. Unfortunately Yamahas went through a rough patch in terms of quality and the TRX was one of those so watch out for severe corrosion on things like fork legs.
