Muc-Off’s ‘All Over Motorcycle Protectant With PTFE’ is said to protect and preserve your bike thanks to its after-wash corrosion inhibitor. As with other products, it should be kept away from your tyres and brakes.

It’s sold in aerosol form and is easy to spray on, though it’s not a high-pressure jet, so can’t reach easily into hidden areas. It’s also designed to be sprayed onto your bodywork for an additional shine.

While Muc-Off says this isn't intended as a dedicated corrosion protectant like XCP, ACF, S-Doc or FS365 for instance, we included it in the test as research shows that many bikers do use it as such.

The steel plate coated with Muc-Off Motorcycle Protectant performed slightly better than the plate having no protection at all, with 60% of the surface rusty by the end of the first week, 95% by the end of the second, and being completely corroded by week six.

Fresh steel plates were cut to size, folded at 90° (to give vertical and horizontal surfaces), then thoroughly cleaned before being coated with each product, as per the manufacturer’s guidelines. The test was carried out indoors, with a reasonably regulated temperature. For more information on how the test was done, please watch the video below.

Morning and night, the plates were each sprayed with a 5% solution of road salt in water, then consistently rinsed off at the end of each week with a hose head set to a shower pattern.

After eight weeks, the hose head was switched to a more aggressive fan spray, and the plates were rinsed with a consistent five full strokes from a distance of one inch each time.

After 14 weeks, any products that hadn’t completely corroded were hosed off every evening.


Muc-Off Motorcycle Protectant stickiness test

Muc-Off left a slightly wet look in some areas of our test plate after 24 hours, but very little sand was retained after dusting, and it all came off with a light rinse.



Metal plates were cut to size then thoroughly cleaned, before each product was applied as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

The plates were left indoors, laid horizontally for 24 hours, then each was dusted with fine sand. The plates were tapped vertically to knock any excess sand off, before being assessed for stickiness.

Next, each plate was rinsed with a hose head set to a shower pattern, and the amount of sand left was assessed.

Finally, each plate was hosed with five full strokes from a distance of one inch using a more aggressive fan pattern, before being checked for any remaining sand. Both rinsing cycles represent the methods used during corrosion testing.


Muc-Off Motorcycle Protectant safety on rubber

Our test O-ring showed no sign of damage, and when measured there was no swelling.

Brand new O-rings kindly supplied by motorcycle parts specialist B&C Express were put into test tubes containing each product. These were left for three months to soak, before the O-rings were carefully removed and assessed for any swelling, cracking, or other changes to their structure.

Please note that we do not recommend using these products as chain lubes – we’re just using the O-rings as a consistent material.


Muc-Off Motorcycle Protectant review verdict

While marketed as making ‘an ideal winter protectant’, Muc-Off Motorcycle Protectant should not be considered a corrosion protectant. This product can help displace the water that's left after you've thoroughly washed any salt and road grime off your bike, and it does leave the surfaces non-sticky. You do need to be aware though that if you're going to take your bike out on the road again, our tests indicate that it won't keep any rain or road salt from attacking your machine.

Muc-Off asked us to make it clear that this is not intended to be a dedicated corrosion protectant, though the website claims it makes 'an ideal winter protectant' and 'prevents dirt adhesion between washes.'

Motorcycle Protectant is also said to give a ‘sparkling finish on treated parts’, but on bodywork in particular, we found it left the surface looking smeary.

Muc-Off has asked us to point out that: "Muc-Off Motorcycle Protectant is not intended as a stand-alone dedicated corrosion protectant, it is formulated to protect your motorcycle by dispersing any remaining moisture after a thorough clean and removal of other corrosive substrates, the product therefore is not designed for the type of use seen in this test which intends to replicate a motorcycle being ridden through winter. A Muc-Off product far better suited to this application is our Corrosion Defence treatment, which will be launching in August 2018.
