Motorcycle insurance, like any other form of insurance, is one of those necessities you’re reluctant to think about, but have to tackle at some point. For many people, insurance is a means of protecting your investment in case of accident, damage, loss or theft, but for those of you who have ever had to make a claim on your insurance before, you’ll agree that it’s worth every penny.
Although there are many insurers out there, there are usually a number of “basics” offered as standard. Some insurers also offer additional bike insurance cover options that can be tailored to your lifestyle and exact requirements.
Most policies include the following at varying levels of cover, but always check with your insurer for the specifics on your cover.
European Union cover
If you fancy taking your pride and joy on a biking holiday to the continent, make sure you check your policy for European cover first. Most insurers restrict cover on a standard policy to a maximum number of days.
Most insurers will reimburse you for the market value of the motorcycle on the policy if it’s never recovered.
Loss or damage to your motorcycle
Check your policy wording carefully for details on cover in case your motorcycle is damaged or destroyed. Some insurers will replace your bike completely, or just cover the cost of repairs.
If your motorcycle is disabled through loss or damage then your insurer may pay for, within reason, the transportation to the nearest garage for repair and deliver to you once fixed.
Riding other bikes
If your policy gives you the flexibility to ride other motorcycles, check the wording carefully to see how comprehensive the cover is. Most insurers will only cover other bikes for third party and some impose rider restrictions – such as age and occupation.
Make sure your insurer offers a 24/7 claims support service, so you can get the advice you need when you need it.
In addition, Bennetts – the UK’s No. 1 for bike insurance – offers a number of additional cover options including Legal Expenses Cover, Personal Accident Cover, RAC Breakdown Cover and Helmet and Leathers Cover. Get a Bike Insurance Quote now!
