New riders given essential knowledge and kit for free

The NextGen rider course is the brainchild of Dr Ian Mew, a consultant in anaesthetics and intensive care medicine, as well as a critical care doctor with Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and co-founder of the DocBike Charity, which was set-up to not only provide motorcycle-based fast-response critical care at the roadside, but to help prevent riders from being involved in collisions in the first place.

“We launched the NextGen rider programme after identifying a worrying increase in injuries suffered by new riders under the age of 35,” said Dr Mew. “By bringing together experts from across the UK – who all volunteer their time – we hope to see new motorcycle riders not only enjoying their riding more, but also being less likely to crash.”

The first course took place over 9 and 10 June, generously hosted by AFC Bournemouth, which kindly provided the location and stewards for the two days.

Over the course of the event, the new motorbike riders gained a huge amount of knowledge with the friendly, light-hearted training including:

  • Rider Skills covering machine control

  • BikerDown emergency life-saving training for injured bikers

  • Motorcycle Maintenance that includes one-to-one advice and tuition from a mechanic

  • Motorcycle Security advice on beating the thieves

  • Protective Rider Clothing tips for getting the best gear without spending a fortune

  • Next Steps advice to taking the full bike test and going on to further training

Phoenix Rider Training and IAM Roadsmart kindly provided the machine control sessions, with DocBike medics helping riders to manage emergency first aid, and Bennetts BikeSocial giving the tips on security and riding kit. Roadskin, Pragmasis, Squire and Bennetts also provided products to use in in the demonstrations.

The riders, who were the first to trial the scheme, left the two-day event with the knowledge to be better, safer riders, as well as understanding how to look after their motorcycles. They also all received:
