The time has arrived and the new era of Ducati’s sports bikes is upon us as the Italian firm has just announced a three-bike line-up of Panigale V4, Panigale V4S and Panigale V4 Speciale, all using the new and hotly anticipated 1103cc, liquid cooled, Desmosedici Stradale 90-degree V4, making a whopping 211bhp at 13,000rpm. Given that its kerb weight is 195kg (for the S and Speciale), the power-to-weight ratio is immense.

Replacing the 1299 L-twin at the head of the supersports production segment, the Panigale V4 is not only the first mass-produced four-cylinder Ducati, it’s the only sports bike to use a 90-degree V configuration, a counter-rotating crankshaft and twin pulse ignition. Not only that but it revs to 14,000rpm.

30 years after the first twin cylinder sportsbike, the Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Edition rolled off the Bologna production line earlier this year but only just before the Ducati V4 announcement was made. The four-cylinder version uses the same 81mm bore as used in the Desmosedici MotoGP engine (the maximum permitted in the rules) but a longer stroke gives the motor a total displacement of 1103cc making the Ducati engine the most powerful in the production sportsbike class.

The limited edition Speciale version has a full Akrapovic system as an optional extra and that’ll provide a much needed extra 2bhp.

Ducati V4 price and availability

BikeSocial understands the price of the Ducati Panigale V4 will be around £19,250 while the Panigale V4 S will be approximately £23,895 leaving the limited edition Panigale V4 Speciale with a tag of £34,995. The V4 and V4 S will be in dealerships from January while the Speciale won’t be seen in the UK until March.

New Frame

Going from two cylinders to four means an inevitable weight gain. At 190kg the 1299 Panigale R FE is 5kg lighter than the new Panigale V4 S yet Ducati have tried to counteract that by designing a new frame.

The aluminium alloy ‘Front Frame’ is said to be more compact and lighter than a perimeter frame, uses the engine as a stressed chassis element and makes the bike narrower where fuel tank meets the seat, of which there is two on the standard V4 and S model but only a single seat on the Speciale.

The main frame attachment points have been incorporated in the front of the upper crankcase half and in the rear cylinder brank head. The crankcase also acts as a rear suspension and swingarm attachment point.

Hi-Tech

It wouldn’t be a new bike from a top manufacturer without a full quota of acronyms but ultimately both safety and control features are, as you’d expect, enhanced.

Controlled drift during braking, cornering ABS for the front wheel, a quickshift up and down that takes lean angle into account are all highlights, each of which are incorporated into the three new riding modes (Race, Sport and Street). And all of which can be adjusted via the TFT display.

Colours

The standard Ducati Panigale V4 and V4 S come in the traditional Ducati Red with grey frame and black wheels while the limited edition V4 Speciale has its own colour scheme with grey frame and black wheels.

Differences between model variants

The main features on the standard V4 are:
