A brief history of Peugeot scooters
Peugeot Scooters (originally Peugeot Motorcycles) is a subsidiary of French car manufacturer Peugeot. The company developed its first motorcycle, which had a De Dion-Bouton engine mounted on the rear wheel, in 1898. Although the debut model was displayed at the Paris Exhibition the same year, it was never actually put into production.
In 1901, Peugeot was inspired by the success of the Werner Brothers’ Motobicyclette to produce its own motorcycle using a Swiss Zürcher and Lüthi (ZL) engine. It also began manufacturing quad bikes in the early 1900s, but these didn’t prove to be particularly popular, and production had ceased by 1903.
A 500cc motorcycle with a Double Overhead Camshaft was developed by Peugeot in 1914 – the first of its type. This helped the brand earn its status as a leader in motorcycle production in France until the Fifties. As times changed, scooters became more popular than mopeds, so Peugeot changed its focus to suit, launching the first Peugeot S55 scooter in 1953. The brand is now famous for its manufacture of scooters and the company achieved record-breaking sales of 550,000 Peugeot bikes in 1974. It also developed large-displacement scooters of 125cc and above in addition to its entry-level 50cc models. These scooters still tend to be popular in Switzerland and France.
Peugeot was particularly active throughout the Nineties, with the launch of the SV scooter in 1990 and the young and trendy Zenith, Buxy and Speedake models in 1995. It also developed the first electric scooter – the Scoot’Elec – and the Speedfight 50 sports scooter, which sold in excess of 500,000 units.
During recent years, Peugeot Motorcycles re-branded to Peugeot Scooters (in 2010) and it has further expanded into the Chinese market.
