Marquez on pole in Germany

Defending champion Marc Marquez blasted a warning to the pretenders to his double MotoGP crown that he is back in business with a scorching lap of the Sachsenring that re-wrote the record books.

The Repsol Honda rider powered in the fastest ever two-wheeled lap in a remarkable time of 1m 20.838secs as he finally overcame the challenges of his team-mate Dani Pedrosa by 0.292secs.

The two of them had dominated the final element of qualifying with Marquez fast out of the blocks with a lap in 1m 20.838s to set the benchmark to which Pedrosa responded, looking to have done enough until Marquez blitzed him with a late flyer to take his fourth pole start of the campaign.

Marquez, who starts the race in fourth place in the title stakes, 74 points down on series leader Valentino Rossi, said: “We are in a good position – all weekend the feel of the bike has been good, like at Assen where I had good pace. We have worked hard and now the race is so important but it will be tough as Dani, Jorge (Lorenzo) and Valentino all have good pace.”

Pedrosa was content to start at the front of the pack, flanked by Jorge Lorenzo who, riding the Movistar Yamaha was only 0.293secs down and ready to take the fight to his team-mate Rossi, whom he trails by ten points.  Lorenzo said: “I made a good lap and am happy with the front row start but it is a long race, 30 laps and we have to see how we can keep the pace.”

Andrea Iannone heads the second row for Ducati, ahead of Yonny Hernandez on the Pramac Ducati with Rossi having to be content with sixth, despite some hard riding and a best lap in 1m 21.220s. The Espargaro brothers Aleix and Pol start from the third row ahead of Bradley Smith who somehow held on as his Monster Tech3 Yamaha swerved wickedly out of line.  Cal Crutchlow, who high-sided in the morning free practice, bounced back to be ninth fastest on the CWM LCR Honda, five places up on Scott Redding on the MarcVDS Honda.

The Laverty brothers, Eugene, riding Honda, and Michael on the Aprilia in place of Marco Melandri start at the back of the pack.
