Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo has clinched victory in Jerez for the eventful second round of the 2011 MotoGP series.
The first European race of the season was plagued by accidents – the first of which involving seven times MotoGP Champion Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner, who ended up sliding into the gravel. Following the collision, Marco Simoncelli was able to pull out a temporary two-second lead, before subsequently highsiding on lap 12.
It was then Lorezo who took charge at the front of the pack – a position he maintained until the chequered flag – with Dani Pedrosa and Nicky Hayden filling the other two podium places.
Meanwhile, Bennetts-supported Cal Crutchlow became a victim of grip during the 27-lap race. The Englishman fell while in fifth position during lap 20. However, he managed to rejoin the field and finished eighth overall.
