Title-hopeful Alex Lowes clinched the first race win at the third round of the British Superbike Championship at Cheshire’s Oulton Park this weekend.
After grabbing the holeshot, reigning champion Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne initially led a trio of riders including Lowes and Josh Brookes at the front of the pack. However, Lowes was determined to win the first race of the day and add valuable points to his championship tally, and managed to claw back the lead from Byrne. In a dramatic turn of events, Shakey later crashed out of contention when trying to make another move around Samsung Honda’s Lowes for the top spot.
While Byrne had to watch the rest of the race from the side-lines, second placed man Josh Brookes fell into the clutches of James Ellison during the closing stages and had to settle for the third step of the podium.
In race two, Byrne, Lowes and Brookes were once again first off the line with Byrne taking the lead on the opening lap. Although Lowes made numerous moves on the reigning champion for the top spot, Shakey was keen to make amends for his first race DNF and fought back, pushing Lowes back to second following an overtake at Cascades.
Meanwhile, Brookes was tucked in third place, stalking the pair while they swapped positions at the front of the field, before seeing his opportunity to move ahead of Lowes on the 11th lap.
The action lasted right up until the end of the race with Brookes attempting a pass on Shakey on the penultimate lap. However, Shakey had the edge and raced over the line to take his fourth race win of the season, with Lowes third.
