Byrne to pull out of Knockhill BSB?

British Superbike champion Shane Byrne may miss the rest of the weekend’s BSB activity at Scotland’s Knockhill circuit. Our sources tell us that three-time champion Byrne has a helicopter waiting to take him back to Kent if necessary after his wife, Petra, was rushed to hospital with post-surgery complications earlier today. It is understood that should Petra need a further operation, the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki man will fly back to Kent to be with her.

Byrne has won four out of six races so far this season and trails championship leader Alex Lowes by just one point. Byrne’s absence could shake things up a bit in the British series with many riders eager for success, such as Josh Brookes, who's looking to claim his first win of the season after a successful campaign on the Isle of Man.

However the BSB “Showdown” system may mean Byrne’s championship assault might not be jeopardised too much by missing one round, as after round nine the top six riders’ points are levelled and the riders are separated by credits gained by finishing on the podium in previous rounds. Byrne won the championship in 2012 despite missing two rounds of the championship due to an injured shoulder
