BSB official test: Lowes shows title-winning potential

Posted: 14 Mar 2013

The first official 2013 British Superbike Championship test continued at Donington Park this afternoon, with two sessions taking place in mixed weather conditions.

Alex Lowes posted the quickest time of 1:31.283 in the second session of the day, demonstrating his title-winning potential ahead of the season start. The Samsung Honda rider, who finished fourth in the 2012 series, is clearly hungry for victory this year, and was keen to show his supporters – including World Superbike Championship rider Leon Haslam – exactly what he could do aboard the CBR1000RR Fireblade.

Meanwhile, first session time-topper Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne completed the second session of the day with a best time of 1:31.632. The Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider, who spoke exclusively to Bike Social earlier today about his future aims in racing, is looking to clinch his fourth BSB title this year. However, he’ll have his work cut out for him, as chasing up the rear is Ryuichi Kiyonari – who returns to Britain after a year racing in Japan.  ‘Kiyo’ also posted quick times in today’s test – including 1:31.876 in session two – and is keen to remind us of his championship-winning form...

Other riders to impress on the timesheet included Keith Farmer and James Westmoreland who finished with the fourth and fifth quickest times respectively, and Jakub Smrz who is taking part in today's test for Padgetts Honda.

As the weather took a turn for the worse at the Leicestershire circuit, session three kicked-off with just 12 riders going out on track. Tommy Bridewell, Jakub Smrz and Danny Buchan were the top three on the timesheet – but the fastest time was 1:32.409 – more than a second slower than the quickest rider in the previous session.

The BSB contingent will now be looking ahead to the season kick-off at Brands Hatch on 5-7 April.
