Brookes, Byrne and Lowes are the top men in BSB

The British Superbike championship is back at Brands Hatch this weekend for Round 6 of the championship. Brands marks four rounds to go until the crucial ‘showdown’ period from Assen until the end of the season in which the top six will go head to head for the BSB title and the battle for a place in the all-important top six is starting to heat up.

Despite a somewhat challenging first part of the season, Milwaukee Yamaha’s James Ellison retains fourth spot with a comfortable buffer of 17 points to Ryuichi Kiyonari in second. The resurgent three-time champion elevating himself into the title fighters group with improved results at Knockhill and Snetterton. Buildbase BMW’s Jon Kirkham currently holds the last place in the top six, just two points behind Kiyonari. Kirkham’s team mate, James Westmoreland is a further four points back in seventh with Kawasaki’s Chris Walker also in clear contention two points behind the BMW.

Back at the front, Byrne has won six out of the last seven races at Brands Hatch, meaning he enters the round as the clear favourite however with Alex Lowes currently on form with a target on Byrne’s rear end; the young Lincolnshire lad could well spoil the veteran’s party this weekend. Josh Brookes – still looking for his first race win of the year – will also be keen to get on the top step having not won a race since Assen last year.

Having achieved his best result of the season last time out at Snetterton, Milwaukee Yamaha’s Josh Waters will be looking to make ground at a circuit he’s sort of been to before (Brands Indy) while his team mate, James Ellison will be looking for a return to the front having not been on the podium since Race 1 at Oulton Park.

Race day is live on British Eurosport from 11:30.
