Alpinestars SMX-1R

The sun is out and it’s that time of year when the shops start stocking up on the summer gear.

It’s no different in the bike world, as the clumpy winter gear gets shuffled back to the stock room to be replaced by more vented summer stuff.

Today sees Italian maestros Alpinestars roll out their new lines for 2016, with some typically neat products from the guys who cloth Jorge Lorenzo.

And while we all know that we should go out in full protection everytime we step on the bike, most of us are guilty of the ‘just nipping down the shops’ couture. That’s why products like A-stars new SMX-1R boots are so great.

While we should stick our full boots on for a ride, low cut ones like these incorporate all the Italian company’s MotoGP know-how in a more practical and easier to wear package. They’re proper bike boots, with all the technology that brings (like grippy and durable soles, proper flex zones and abrasion resistant materials) and that makes them far, far, safer than riding around in a pair of Converse.

At £139.99 they’re not exactly cheap, but then again how much do you value your ankles. As they’re only just in the shops, we yet can’t vouch for the comfort, but we expect they’ll be way more comfortable to walk around in than full on race boots – great if you like riding to events and race meetings.

Colours are plain black or a black and red combo. To try them on for yourself, head down to your local Alpinestars stockist. And don’t forget to tell ‘em Bike Social sent you, right!
