Thousands of bikers go through their motorcycle test every year, and to go on the road for the first time without the support from an instructor, can be a daunting experience. But like most things, once you get used to it, it becomes second nature and then you wonder why you were so nervous in the first place.
So, just to give you a head start, here's some tips that are designed to help you prepare you for your first 'instructor free' ride!
Short Trips
Begin by taking short journeys. This will get you used to your bike and will build your confidence. When you are comfortable with your riding style gradually increase your riding time you can then gradually build up to long journeys.
Be aware of weather conditions
Make sure you carry waterproofs with you whatever the weather. Wear several layers to make sure you stay warm and make regular watering stops to avoid dehydration.
Try to keep your bike headlight on
You are more at risk on the road than other motorists, so keeping your headlight on at all times will make you more visible to other road users.
Assume that you are invisible to other road users
This will make you more aware of their actions and any sudden movements they may make.
Think before you make your manoeuvre
Take a 'lifesaver glance' over your shoulder before carrying out any manoeuvre, so that you become aware of the whereabouts of other motorists.
Travel at speeds you are comfortable with
Always allow enough time to slow down and stop, especially in wet, foggy or icy conditions.
Stop regularly
Take frequent stops to make sure you stay alert.
Know your motorcycle
Regular maintenance, including checking brakes and oil checks, will ensure safe riding.
